Chapter 4
Quarter 3
I spent every day with Damian after school and on weekends. We did everything from playing basketball and going to the mall and kissing in the park. He was truly sweet and kind, a perfect gentleman ⦠just like my daddy. I felt as if he was my only friend.
I visited my brother every weekend in jail. He seemed happy but I could tell he just wanted to run out of the place. Fortunately he was able to wear his own clothes. Those orange jumpsuits with the numbers printed on it did nothing for his great sense of style. The walls of the visiting room were gray and stale looking. There were no beautiful designs, patterns, or even signs of life. There was nothing but the basic furnitureâblack chairs and black tables and they were bolted to the ground.
My nights were spent dreaming of the day my brother would be released from jail and how I was going to get Ray and Tommy back. In my heart, I believed they knew everything about my brother; and even if they didnât know about him, look where their plan got him. After watching what they did to Charlie, I couldnât put anything past the two of them. I still couldnât figure out how I was going to find out the truth. So I decided since theyâd investigated me, I would investigate them.
Ray walked around school as if nothing had happened. Tommy picked up where he left off but with another cheerleader. Poor thing, she doesnât even have a clue. She is never going to get anywhere with him, at least not if Ray can help it.
I played their game too. I smiled in their faces, had fake conversations and even hung at her house a few nights. I knew that things would never be the same. But I still needed to know their version of the truth.
Itâs timeâ¦.
The third Saturday in February, we went to my grandmotherâs house. Her birthday was actually on Valentineâs Day. Everyone was so busy with our day-to-day activities that no one in the family was able to celebrate her birthday until the weekend. My parents made sure that we were free that weekend to celebrate.
When we walked in her house, the whole place fell quiet. It was like nobody knew what to say to us because of my brother being locked up. My mom walked over to my grandma and gave her a hug and kiss that swept her off her feet. Mommy hugged her so tight, my grandmother sounded like she was gasping for air. This made everyone laugh. My momâs gesture seemed to have put the family at ease.
After an hour of socializing, I slid out the back door. Angie saw me and followed me. I had not spoken to her since we left Grandmaâs house months ago. She stopped and looked at me like she wanted to say something but I didnât need to hear any words. We gave each other a hug; regardless of how we act, we are still family.
